Basic Training Commands

There are many training commands but if you want to start with something, always star from the basic. You wouldn't know what's 729x255 is if you don't know what's 7+2.

Humans and Dogs are almost the same when come to learning. When we were young, we learn AbC from the ABC song, even up till now, you still have that song in your mind when someone ask you what's the letter before R.

Some of us have no knowlegde about training a dog and some of us would go to the library to research on dog's training. Lucky for you, I know what needs to train first for your dog.

* Always remember to train your dog for clicker train before any training. It's simple, just click and give them a treat. Keep doing this and they will understand that when you click, they get a treat. Eventually, no matter where they at, when you click, they'll come for their treats. (Never not give treats after you click as it will make the whole clicker training pointless)*

There are 3 basic commands that will help you in your future dog's training.

Name

There's a saying, "you don't choose what's its name but it'll tell." We often call out pet name yet they don't respond. That's not because they couldn't listen or be bothered with you because they're too distracted. It' because they do not know that words that you shout out loud is their name. So, train them their name first is important. It's not only for you to call them out to know where they at but you will also use their name in the future for training. For example, "Lesley fetch", "Lesley eat" or "Lesley sit". If you don't train them their name, eventually they will know that that's their name but it would take weeks or even months.

Steps:

1. Have a treat and a clicker, have your dog in front of you. Hold the treats in between your eyes and call out their name. When they look at you or the treats, click and treat. Do this for about 5 minutes.

2. Next, hold the treats away from you and call out their name. When they look at you, instead of the treat in your hand away from your eyes, click and treat. Do this for about 5 minutes.

3. Keep it quiet and let your dog be away from you (about 1 metre), call out their name, only when they turn or put theri head up to look at you , click and treat. Do this for about 5 minutes.

4. Once they have mastered it at your quiet home. Bring them out to the balcony or garden or a walk, train them outside. There are more distraction outside but if they listen to you, you know they've mastered this command wonderfully.

Do this everyday for about 5 days to a week and your dog will learn their name.

Come

Now that your pup has learn its name, It's time to teach them the second basic command, the "come" command.

This command is very essential as your pup is still curious about the world or even every corner of your house. Their love for sniffing around is the same as how we all love them. Instead of you have to go and pick them up, you can call them to come and the come outomatically. Wouldn't that be wonderful? The come command and clicker training is almost the same. The difference is that you put word in it. This command is quite challenging but the good news is, you'll realize that you have more patient than you thought.

Steps:

1. Have a clicker and a treat ready. Be at least 1.5 metre away from your pup. Call your pup name with the come command ("Lesley come"), while showing them that you have a treat in your hand. When they come to you, click and treat. do this for about 5 minute.

2. Once they understood that "come" means get closer to you, walk away from your pup for about 3 metre away and see if they still come to you. When they do, click and treat.

3. Same thing, once they've mastered this command at home, train them outside for a solid training outcome.

Sit

When we humans walk for hours in a shopping mall too long, we get tired, and when we got tired, we sit. Same as dogs. We will bring our dog for a walk and sometimes it may not be too long for us but it is for our furry friend. We need to understand that they need to sit too. They will eventually sit on their own but sometimes we want them to sit with us. Teaching the sit command is essential when we bring our dog to the park or to the pet store. This command is not only for them to sit but it also train them to listen to us in any situation.

Steps:

1. Have your treats and clicker with you. Call them to come and tell them to sit. When they sit, click and treat. Do this for about 5 minutes.

2. When they mastered it at home, try it outside with all the distraction around.

Once they have mastered these 3 commands, I assure you that in the future, your training will not be as challenging as you thought it would be.
